August 15, 2008 - ATL Well Represented in Regional; Davies Wins ATL Championship
For the third time since 2004, the Twilight League hosted the AABC North Atlantic Regional tournament and had both its representatives, Albany Athletics and Davies AC, make impressive runs through the tournament. Davies edged out the Athletics in the Twilight League standings giving them a bye past the State Tournament into Regionals, while the Athletics won its third straight State championship to advance to the Regional event.
Davies began the tournament with wins over the Long Island Storm, Brass City (CT) and North Haledon (NJ) while the A’s earned wins over Verdero (Bronx) and AS Batting (CT) then earned a bye through the third round.
Both the A’s and Davies met up in a fourth round matchup undefeated in the tournament on Friday night at Central Park A diamond with a sizeable crowd on hand. The A’s got the best of Davies in a 7-2 victory leaving the Athletics as the only undefeated team in the tournament at the time. The next day Davies was eliminated by a strong Worcester, MA team by a slim 5-4 margin while the A’s dropped its first game to Easton, MA, 8-4 in the 5th round. The Athletics then faced Worcester in the semifinal while Easton received a bye to the championship game. Albany eliminated Worcester by a 2-0 score and advanced to its second straight Regional championship. On an overcast Sunday but yet another large crowd, Easton once again defeated the Athletics by an 8-1 score repeating as Regional champions.
Overall, the Twilight League hosted its most successful AABC postseason event with this year’s Regional with nearly 20 volunteers on hand to manage a 19-game tournament schedule. The league has now hosted five State Tournaments since 2000 and three Regionals since 2004.

August 4, 2008 - ATL Set to Host North Atlantic Regional
The Albany Twilight League will host the American Amateur Baseball Congress (AABC) North Atlantic Regional Tournament August 7-10 at Bleecker Stadium and Central Park where 10 teams will compete to advance to the AABC National World Series in Houston, Texas the following week.

Defending Regional champion Easton Huskies will return to the event following a 36-0 season in the Cranberry League in eastern Massachusetts and the New England state championships. Easton finished third in the World Series in 2007. Also returning to this year’s Regional is the 2006 National Champion Long Island Storm from the Long Island Stan Musial League who posted a gaudy 55-15 record in 2008. This year’s Hall of Fame inductees are infielders Paul Reinisch and Joe Mariano, pitcher Kevin Cole, utility player Frank Mosher and former league Commissioner and Vice President Dick Barrett. This past month, a committee of league officers and commissioners voted the four inductees as the top selections after reviewing nominations made following the 2007 season. A player, officer or coach is eligible for induction after two full seasons of being retired.
Reinisch is considered arguably one of the best position players to ever play in the league. A dangerous switch-hitting first baseman and third baseman, he was a seven-time All-Star selection for both Davies AC and All-Stars Academy leading those teams to a combined four league championships. His .450 batting average in 2004 earned him the league batting title and a Most Valuable Player award that year—an award he captured a total of four times. He is ranked second in the modern era with an all-time batting average of .387 and played in 1990, then from 1993-95 and 2000-2005. Reinisch is a former Albany-Colonie Diamond Dog.
Mariano, mainly a shortstop and also a teammate of Reinisch’s for over a decade, was a six-time All-Star and played on four league championship teams. In 2002, he led the league in hitting and won the league MVP award. Mariano’s career in the league started in 1986 with the Albany County Sheriffs, then following the 1994 season he spent time in professional baseball before returning to the Twilight League in 2000 with All-Stars Academy . He closed out his career in 2005 with Davies AC and currently ranks 12th all-time in at-bats and total hits.
Cole, a right-handed pitcher with the Troy Haymakers for 13 seasons, was a six-time All-Star and selected as league Pitcher of the Year four times. In 1992, he enjoyed his best season going 9-0 with a 1.68 ERA to capture the league’s MVP award. In 1998, he led the Haymakers to the league championship and was named the playoff MVP during the team’s run. Cole is currently ranked 3rd all-time in total wins and strikeouts.
Mosher was a utility player for Roxy’s Cleaners from 1950-59. Known as a catalyst to Roxy’s teams, Mosher help guide Roxy’s to five league championships over a 10-year period. In 1954 Mosher led the league in batting with a .439 average putting him among the top candidates for league MVP that season.
Barrett served as league Vice President from 1974-2001. Barrett, who currently serves on the league’s Veteran’s Association committee, co-authored the league’s 75th anniversary yearbook in 2005 which highlighted each era of the league since its inception. Since 1980 he made significant contributions annually to the league’s yearbook and during that time helped implement strategies to keep the league’s home at Bleecker Stadium. As the City of Albany’s Superintendent of Bleecker Stadium from 1971-93 and Commissioner of Parks and Recreation from 1983-1997, Barrett was a vital liaison to the league and understood the vision and strength of it despite the influx of new summer leagues and teams coming and going over the years in the Albany area.
